@scottjehl yeah, good question! I’d say WordPress is the most popular alternative, for sure—and plenty has been said about the DX/UX there. Speaking for myself, I want to use JS on the backend and the frontend—though I like to keep them separate in a lot of ways too (hi 2 isomorphic JS).
